The Future is Responsive Design

The way we consume and to a certain degree even create content has changed dramatically over the past 3 years. It’s crazy, but the first iPad only came out in April 2010… seems like a lifetime ago right? It used to be simple, you either had a laptop or a desktop computer, PC or Mac. Now it’s a sea of tablets and smartphones, and a whole ocean of PCs.

Here’s an interesting statistic from Channel News, in 2012 Q4 one in three PCs sold was a tablet (cheers Nathan Musson  for putting me onto that stat).

So as web developers how do we react to this shift? Well for many, including AMC, there’s Responsive Design.

In a nutshell this is a website user interface designed to auto format content according to the user’s device. Whether you are viewing the website from a desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone (even down to landscape or portrait orientations), Responsive Design ensures the viewer can access the content and offers the best possible user experience for that device.

When was the last time you viewed your own website from a range of devices and PCs? If it’s been a while, then it’s almost certainly time to rethink your content/website strategy. Moving forward it makes sense to format content and design websites primarily for mobile devices and then work backwards from there.
